Hair transplantation is an in-office procedure. It does not require general anesthesia. In fact, no hospitalization or intubation is required. The entire process is conducted in an office equipped for hair transplantation. Some specialists use laughing gas or IV anesthetics. In fact, patients who undergo hair transplantation like to be awake during the entire process. We use only local numbing anesthetics and oral anesthetics. No laughing gas, IV, or general anesthetics are utilized.
Los Angeles Hair Transplant Center specializes in numbing nerve roots of the scalp. By applying the numbing medication in some localized regions, he numbs the particular nerve roots and all its branches in the desired areas of the scalp. This way, less local numbing medication is required throughout the procedure. Also, medications such as Vicodin and Valium are optional and can be given orally throughout the procedure.
For about one after the procedure, some patients may experience discomfort on the back of the scalp in the area the strip of hair was removed. Oral pain medication such as Vicodin or Ibuprofen is effective in reducing the pain. Less than 25% of our clients require pain medication by the second night. Also, applying ice to the back of the scalp as well as the forehead will help alleviate the discomfort.
Although rare, some patients may have allergic reactions to local anesthetics. At a recent meeting on Baldness Los Angeles, Los Angeles Hair Transplant Center discussed such allergic reactions. Novocaine, a common anesthetic used mainly in dental procedures, may cause allergic reactions in some people. In hair transplantation, Lidocaine, not Novocaine, is the more commonly used local anesthetic. Although the two share the same suffix (cocaine), they belong to different classes of anesthetics. Even more infrequently, a patient may have an allergic reaction to both Novocaine and Lidocaine. In such circumstances, we utilize Carbocaine, a medication in an entirely different class than both Novocaine and Lidocaine, to locally numb the scalp during the procedure.
No general anesthesia, intubation or IV anesthetics are utilized during the proceedings. Only local numbing medications are administered. Los Angeles Hair Transplant Center takes advantage of numbing the nerve roots to reduce the number of medicines used throughout the day. Patients are awake for the duration of the entire procedure. Patients may watch movies and take breaks on an hourly basis in addition to lunch breaks and bathroom breaks. Our goal is to make sure you have the best experience with the most optimal results.
